Their Story

Lionel Smith, Ltd was founded in March of 1976 in the heart of downtown Aiken, SC. After working in and managing several clothing stores, founder Lionel “Smitty” Smith decided to open his own haberdashery. In 1992, having worked for his father essentially his entire life, Van Smith bought the business from Smitty. In 2026, S.C. Sen. Tom Young, R-Aiken, presented Smitty and Van a resolution from the state’s General Assembly, which recognizes their store for its longevity and its “sustained excellence in menswear, tailoring and customer service.” The resolution also honors Smitty and Van for their “leadership, entrepreneurship and contributions to the economic and cultural life” of downtown Aiken and the CSRA.
