Holman’s Bridge was constructed in 1801 by John Holman as a toll bridge cross the South Fork of the Edisto River. In 1829, the crossing was transferred to public ownership with Barnwell and Orangeburg Districts sharing control. In February of 1865, Confederate troops burned the bridge as a means to slow the advance of the Union XV Corps. After the Civil War, the bridge was rebuilt and remained in use into the 20th century.
