https://www.edistofriends.org/The Edisto River is North America’s longest free-flowing blackwater river with approximately 310 unobstructed river miles. The river rises from South Carolina’s fall line, where the rolling hills of the Piedmont and the Midlands give way to the sandy flatlands of the Coastal Plain. Two forks, North and South, flow through the upper coastal plain and converge into the main stem Edisto River, which continues to the Atlantic Ocean.
The South Fork of the Edisto, which runs through Thoroughbred Country, begins as a small stream in Johnston and flows southeast for 105 miles where it meets the North Fork near Branchville to form the Edisto River. The South Fork has the most remote stretches of river and is mostly narrow and winding. The river houses a natural cathedral of swamp, hardwoods and cypress that create a scenic home for pinfish, catfish, largemouth bass, eels, bream, alligators, wood ducks and other freshwater birds.
