Carlisle Military School was first established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford College by the South Carolina Methodist Conference. The school was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle, who was the president of Wofford College, professor of mathematics and astronomy and recognized as Wofford’s most influential faculty member of the 19th century.

The school served as a coeducational preparatory institution for Wofford Collage until 1932 when Carlisle was leased by Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher. In 1938. the Rishers purchased the school and renamed it Carlisle Military School. They, and later their son, Colonel William Risher, operated it as a military preparatory boarding school for young men until it closed in May 1977. The Risher family also owned Camden Military Academy and moved all operations there after Carlisle closed.
