First Day Hike: Aiken State Park
Start your New Year’s resolution out on the right foot with with a guided hike at Aiken State Park. Along the way, a ranger will stop and talk about both nature and history topics related to the park. This walk promises to be invigorating to the mind and body.
First Day Hikes may include Jungle Nature Trail or Compartment C Hike.
- The 3-mile Jungle Nature Trail is a level, easy-to-follow dirt turf loop through tropical-looking wetlands and mixed pine and hardwood forest. The Kids-In-Parks Track Trail includes self-guided activities and smartphone e-adventures that will turn your outing into a fun-filled, discovery-packed day. Little explorers can discover wildlife, learn about nature and connect with the history of the site. Plus, kids can log their adventures online to earn prizes.
- The Compartment C Hike is exclusively available for select events. This portion of the park is not currently open to the public, but you will have the opportunity to see and hear what makes this area important in the park’s resource management practices. You will want to be on the lookout for red-cockaded woodpeckers or even a fox squirrel. No strollers or wagons – trail is too rough.
The hike is free with paid park admission. Make sure to bring water, binoculars, insect repellent, hiking shoes and a camera if you desire. Pets are welcome and must be on a 6ft leash at all times. Dress for the weather.
