Upcoming Event
Event Name: 'Happyville/Sharing Project' Exhibit
Event Occurs: Daily
Event Description: Join us on Friday, June 1st, at the Aiken County Historical Museum for the opening of the "Happyville/Sharing Project" exhibit - a collaboration with Professor Joel Tauber of Wake Forest University. While researching themes of sharing with his young son, Tauber learned about the Jewish commune called Happyville which was located in Aiken County. This was a time in America when there were numerous socialist experiments. In 1905, 50 Russian Jews from New York came to South Carolina and started the community. Happyville has almost entirely disappeared, but you can explore what remains by visiting the exhibit at the Aiken County Historical Museum -- located not too far from where Happyville once was.

The exhibit is a multi-media project and, in addition to the Happyville video, there are 4 other short films and interviews that explore the meaning and value of sharing in a personal and interdisciplinary way. In the spirit of the project, we ask that you bring a canned good when you visit.

The exhibit will run from June 1st through July 29th. The canned food items will be collected through that time. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, July 29th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., whereupon the canned food collection will be distributed to share with others.

The Museum is located at 433 Newberry St., SW, in Aiken. Hours are Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, please call 803-642-2015.
